Ted Stevens May Be Gone, But Arctic Refuge Still in Peril

Alaska Republican Ted Stevens has finally been ousted from the U.S. Senate, but that's not necessarily good news for people who care about protecting wilderness and wildlife.. The victorious Democrat who beat Stevens, Mayor Mark Begich of Anchorage, strongly favors drilling for oil in the pristine Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, despite the potentially devastating environmental consequences.  Reported the LA Times, Mark Begich settled in Wednesday as Alaska's newest U.S. senator-elect by d

VIDEO: Sarah Palin Slaughtered Turkey Interview

Seriously, that dude couldn’t have taken a break for 2 minutes?  Or, did someone really think aluminum funnel looking things made for a good backdrop?  Oh my god, we almost had a president from Alaska. Huffington Post, thank you.

This is why Sarah Palin could never be Leader of the Free World

Sarah Palin visited a Wasilla, Alaska turkey farm to execute one of her responsibilities as Governor: to pardon a turkey.  After the ceremony was finished, she hung around to take a few questions on camera  from the gaggle of reporters (boom-boom).  She gave one of her usual incomprehensible spiels on the economy before saying something about enjoying the break after the election, those crazy couple of months, "it's nice to receive out and do somethin' to promote a local business... to just partici

The future of proposition 8

Some Californians are suing to overturn proposition 8. The primary argument for the lawsuit is a little bit technical. below California law, voters may pass an “amendment” to the California state constitution with a simple majority. But a “revision” of the constitution requires the agreement of two-thirds of the legislature, plus the majority of voters. Proposition 8 was passed by the voters, but not by the legislature (nor would 2/3 of the California legislature, which favors marraige equali

Sarah Palin officially pardons a turkey...while his roommates are slaughtered while she gives an interview

This chick is priceless. After taking time out of her "busy" schedule up there in Alaska...Gov. Palin stops by a turkey hatchery in Wasilla and pardons a turkey. She feels it's only fitting since Benjamin Franklin once named the turkey as our national bird....In the meantime, as she's giving another interview (also known as) a flurry of words...a few of Pardoned Turkey Joe's roommates are slaughtered right before our eyes...

Double You Tee Eff?!

Some videos you just have to look to believe. On Thursday, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin appeared in Wasilla in order to pardon a local turkey in anticipation of Thanksgiving. This proved to be a slightly absurd but ultimately unremarkable event. But what came next was positively surreal. After the pardon Palin proceeded to do an interview with a local TV station while the turkeys were being SLAUGHTERED in the background!! Seemingly oblivious to the gruesomeness going on over her shoulder, she ca

some waves are bigger than others

It's Thursday, November 20th, 2008. The days are short, here in Anchorage, Alaska. Today we had six hours and fifty minutes of daylight. The sun set at 4:11 p.m. Today's high? 21 degrees Fahrenheit. The low? 18. We've got snow on the ground, on the trees, on the roads. And where there isn't snow, there's ice.  It's quite lovely, but I do admit that after the last few weeks --these last few brutal weeks-- I could really go for a long, lazy, hot and humid day. I sort of miss sweating and humidi

November 21, 2008 -- Assigned Reading

Overt Bias Again on Display at MSNBC, but... (FROM: Newsbusters) What MSNBC did--the commentary at the end by David Shuster and the text overlaying the interview ("TURKEYS DIE AS GOVERNOR PALIN TAKES QUESTIONS FROM MEDIA," "GOV. PALIN APPARENTLY OBLIVIOUS TO TURKEY CARNAGE OVER HER SHOULDER") in particular--shows their overt bias against the Alaska governor, and is reprehensible but expected from that wonderful network. I will say, however, that there is something inherently silly about the vi

Obama Shocker: He Uses Good Grammar

Obama's Use of  Complete Sentences Stirs Controversy: Stunning Break with Past Eight Years In the first two weeks since the election,  President-elect Barack Obama has broken with a tradition established over  the past eight years through his controversial use of complete sentences,  political observers say. Millions of Americans who watched Mr.  Obama's appearance on CBS' "Sixty Minutes" on Sunday witnessed the  president-elect's unorthodox verbal tick, which had Mr. Obama employing  grammatic

Video: Palin Pardons one turkey while another is slaughtered behind her

Alaska governor Sarah Palin can’t catch a break. Palin visited a turkey farm in Anchorage, Alaska yesterday to pardon a turkey in time for Thanksgiving. Following the pardoning, Palin was interviewed by a news crew while a farm worker behind Palin was busy slaughtering another turkey. Well, it is a turkey farm and that’s what they do there. But common sense should have prevailed and the turkey killing should have halted at least until the cameras were gone. Don’t watch this video if you f

YELLOWEYE ROCKFISH

I haven't been cooking much lately (at least not anything I would want to show a photo of), so I decided to show a photo of a fish my husband caught this summer. The fish is a Yellow Eye Rockfish, also called a Pacific Red Snapper. This is a very tender and mild-tasting white-fleshed fish. I often use it in fish stews I make. I'm soon to start on a new Sunday Series - Sunday Slow Soupers. I'm going to have to skip the first week though. The recipe is a Porcini Mushroom-Chestnut Soup, and I can'

Lincoln’s Literary Legacy…

photo credit: neighborhoods.org My pick for this literary state was Hemingway…  and still is.  If you can receive past his “he-man” sensibility, I still believe Hemingway is one of the best writers ever to craft an understated, direct sentence.  I recently created a kit on The Sun Also Rises and fell in adore with his prose every over again.  However, for a more contemporary look at the state of Illinois, here are Omnivoracious’s picks: The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow: “I am an Amer
